Quote collecting is one of my obsessions. It’s amazing how a few phrases can instantly transform your mood or give you a new perspective on things. Here are a few of my favorites ~

“To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

“If you look to others for fulfillment, you will never truly be fulfilled. If your happiness depends on money, you will never be happy with yourself. Be content with what you have; rejoice in the way things are. When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you.”~ Lao Tsu

“I had the blues because I had no shoes, until upon the street, I met a man who had no feet.”~ my mom reminds me of this all the time

“In the words of ecstatic poet Kabir, we remember that ‘the river that flows in you also flows in me.’ This river of life is always there, pulsing within us and between us. We just need to step beyond our egos, judgments, and fears so we can experience it.” ~ Charlotte Kasl

“Upon the moment of commitment the entire universe conspires to assist you.” ~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

“Whatever you do will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

“Good things will come to you in ways you could never anticipate or expect. Yet if you’re constantly placing judgments, conditions and restrictions on your life, you’ll miss out on most of those good things.” ~ Ralph Marston

“The three grand essentials to happiness in this life are something to do, something to love and something to hope for.”~ Joseph Addison

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did so. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” ~ Mark Twain

“I am a work in progress, dressed in the fabric of a world unfolding, offering me intricate patterns of questions, rhythms that never come clean, and strengths that you still haven’t seen.”~Ani DiFranco

“I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.”~ Rabindranath Tagore

“Once the last tree is cut and the last river poisoned, you will find you cannot eat your money.” ~ traditional saying, referenced by writer Joyce McLean in the Globe and Mail, 1989

“Love means to commit oneself without guarantee, to give oneself completely in the hope that our love will produce love in the loved person. Love is an act of faith, and whoever is of little faith is also of little love.”~ Erich Fromm

“But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires: To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night. To know the pain of too much tenderness. To be wounded by your own understanding of love; And to bleed willingly and joyfully.” ~ Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet

“The secret of attraction is to love yourself. Attractive people judge neither themselves nor others. They are open to gestures of love. They think about love, and express their love in every action. They know that love is not a mere sentiment, but the ultimate truth at the heart of the universe.” ~Deepak Chopra

“Hold on to what is good even if it is a handful of earth. Hold on to what you believe even if it is a tree which stands by itself. Hold on to what you must do even if it is a long way from here…Hold on to my hand even when I have gone away from you.”  ~ Pueblo Indian Prayer
